What is Business English?

Without a doubt, there are many definitions of what Business English means – it can be a confusing and wide-ranging topic, and of course it depends on your job title and where you work.  My view is that Business English is the English that you need so that you can feel confident in your job or studies.  For example, being able to follow the work you do in English, writing with good grammar and appropriately-worded emails; understanding clearly what your colleagues are saying; speaking with colleagues; making presentations; reading and writing reports, as well as CV writing and job interview techniques. So these are the kinds of things I focus on as a Business English teacher.

The thing that worries people most about any kind of English learning is...grammar! However, there are different ways of looking at it. Sometimes it's a case of getting more practise, or a quick explanation; other times we need to go into more depth. But the most important thing about grammar is for it to be explained in a way that makes sense to you, and to make sure you’re comfortable with it before we move on to something else.  After all, if you’re speaking and/or writing in English for your job, you probably want to be able to do this with as few errors and as confidently as possible.

As for vocabulary, if you are in a specialist environment, I may not know all the vocabulary you need to begin with, but I will do my research so that I can help you sort through which words you need and what phrases are most relevant,  I'll advise you on appropriate translations of your specialist vocabulary, and we can also take a thorough look at your general workplace or study vocabulary.

I also bring in some general reading, writing, listening, speaking and vocabulary topics to Business English lessons, so that you are able to use English in your every-day life too.  After all, when you speak with colleagues, it’s not always about work, and maybe you’ll meet some English-speaking people outside of work too 😊.

So there you have it – a summary of what I think Business English means. What do you think? I'd love to hear your views on the topic - or how I can help you with your Business English needs.
