Firstly, a note on the heading of this blog. Unfortunately my website header only has one font, which does not use the correct 'a' symbol needed for typing the phonetic sound we're discussing today, which is: /aɪ/ when correctly typed. It's important to always get the form of phonetic symbols right, otherwise they will represent a different sound, or something that doesn't exist at all. Unfortunately I had no choice for the heading here, so my apologies for any confusion.
So, let's take a look at this / aɪ / sound! There is no doubt that if you speak English, you use this sound all the time. Why? Because it's the sound of the letters 'I' as in, "I am 50" and also the "y" in "Why'!
/ aɪ / I
/ waɪ / Why
/ maɪ / My
/ taɪ / Thai
/ aɪz / Eyes
/ flaɪt / Flight
/ haɪt / Height
/ laɪk / like
Isn’t amazing all the different ways we can spell just one sound? 😊
Next, we’ll look at the sound / aʊ / - It will be the last vowel sound on our list.
