Starting again

Over the summer, many students have stopped having language lessons, intending to start again in September.  This sometimes means up to two months of not studying.  You might find that you’ve forgotten a lot, and that can be disheartening.  From my own experience, I know this feeling: I’ve been studying Italian since last September, and after a long break I’ve already been worrying about how much I’ve forgotten and how I’m going to get back to the level I was in June.  But the trick is to not be disheartened and to revise what you’ve already learnt – before you start lessons again.  You might be surprised by how much you can remember once you look at it, and whatever has disappeared from your short-term memory can quickly come back.

So my advice, which I’m trying to follow also, is to start looking back over your notes now.  Highlight the things you’ve forgotten, and keep testing yourself until you feel they’re familiar (even if not perfect) again. Don’t put pressure on yourself to revise everything at once, take it slowly. Try to listen to, watch, or do some reading in the language you’re learning.  You’ll feel more motivated to start classes again, and when you do, you won’t be struggling to keep up and you’ll enjoy learning more!

Do you have any tips about how to get back into language learning again?  If so, I’d love to hear from you, and I’m sure other students would appreciate your hearing about your experiences too!
